The youth wing of the MDP is calling for a new leadership, stated Ahmed Didi, the Member of Parliament for the Maradhoo constituency.
He made these remarks during an interview with RaajjeMV while traveling to the atolls to campaign for Member of Parliament Meekail Ahmed Naseem, who is contesting the MDP Chairperson election. He stated that the visits to the islands clearly demonstrate that the general membership overwhelmingly supports Meekail. However, Didi noted that some individuals are attempting to project a different narrative to the public. He further emphasized that the youth are calling for modern reforms and increased participation in shaping the party's future.
"We are traveling starting from Raa Atoll. Support for Meekail is very strong. Contrary to the narrative and the atmosphere some are trying to portray, young members want to see a significant change in the leadership," Didi said.
Didi further noted that some individuals are portraying the ongoing chairperson election as a campaign for the presidential primary. He stated that this sentiment is also being echoed by the general public. He emphasized that, in reality, the choice of a party chairperson requires profound and careful consideration.
The most intense competition for the MDP chairpersonship is between Meekail and former President Mohamed Nasheed. The election is scheduled to take place this coming June.
