Building previously utilized as a COVID-19 facility in Hulhumalé, repurposed into a prison unit, with inmates already transferred
The Maldives Correctional Service has announced that the new facility being developed at the former COVID-19 site will accommodate 140 inmates, with the first of five cell blocks now complete and housing an initial batch of 16 prisoners. This air-conditioned unit is expected to significantly ease the logistical challenges of housing inmates brought to the Male' area for court hearings or medical treatment, while also reducing associated transportation costs.

The building in Hulhumalé Phase 1, previously utilized as a COVID-19 facility, has been repurposed into a prison unit, with several inmates already transferred to the site.
The building is located adjacent to the Criminal Court, directly opposite Tree Top Hospital.
The Maldives Correctional Service has announced that the new facility being constructed at the site of the former COVID-19 facility will have a total capacity of 140 people. According to the Service, all work on the first of the five cell blocks within the prison unit has been completed. Consequently, the first batch of 16 inmates was transferred to the unit on Saturday.
The Maldives Correctional Service stated that this air-conditioned facility, which includes holding cells, is designed to house inmates serving sentences who are engaged in technical work within the Male' area.
Maldives Correctional Service stated that with the completion of all ground floor works scheduled for June, it will significantly ease the process of transporting and accommodating inmates brought to Male' for court hearings and medical consultations, while also reducing overall transportation costs.
Furthermore, Corrections stated that services are currently being provided under challenging conditions, including space constraints, logistical hurdles, and adverse weather, all while officers undertake high-risk and demanding responsibilities.
The closure of Male’ Prison on Boduthakurufaanu Magu has led to significant overcrowding issues. In response, Maldives Correctional Service has stated that efforts are currently underway to expand prison capacity.
