MDP National Congress passes resolution to implement initiatives outlined in joint statement issued by three former presidents
The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has passed a resolution accusing President Muizzu’s administration of violating the Constitution, undermining the independence of state powers, and steering the nation toward authoritarianism. The resolution highlights a declining economy, increasing restrictions on press freedom, and the erosion of democratic principles, prompting the MDP to pledge its support for the joint efforts of three former presidents to restore constitutional order and implement their collective vision for the country.

The MDP National Congress has passed a resolution to implement the initiatives outlined in the joint statement issued by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, former President Mohamed Nasheed, and former President Abdulla Yameen.
The resolution, which incorporates the key points highlighted in the joint statement by the three presidents, was submitted to the Parliament by the former Chairperson of the MDP, Fayyaz Ismail. The motion was seconded by the former Member of Parliament for the Hoarafushi constituency, Ahmed Saleem. Following a floor debate, the resolution was passed unanimously by all members present at the sitting.
The resolution states that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration is openly infringing upon the fundamental rights guaranteed to Maldivian citizens under the Constitution. It further asserts that the loss of legal protections and safeguards promised to the people by the Constitution and existing laws has become an evident reality.
Furthermore, it is believed that the systematic erosion of the legislature's authority through political influence over elected Members of Parliament, the undermining of the independence of the judiciary and state institutions, the dismantling of the system of checks and balances, the destruction of the decentralization framework, and the weakening of good governance were all part of a coordinated effort to steer the Maldives toward authoritarianism.
The Maldives is facing a severe economic downturn, characterized by a decline in private businesses and economic activity, alongside skyrocketing inflation. This has led to a significant deterioration in living standards, causing immense hardship for the public. Meanwhile, government waste has reached extreme levels, and development projects across the islands have come to a standstill. With mounting debt and the lack of a viable repayment strategy, the nation’s future is now shrouded in deep uncertainty.
The current administration has obstructed press freedom, raided newsrooms, and imprisoned journalists and peaceful protesters. Furthermore, the erosion of the rights to assembly and freedom of expression has weakened the power of the people and dismantled the democratic principles Maldivians fought for over many years.
As the nation reaches a point where public trust in the government has completely vanished, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) believes that joining the efforts led by former Presidents Mohamed Nasheed, Abdulla Yameen, and Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to restore the country’s course is in the best interest of the nation and its citizens. Consequently, the party’s National Congress hereby pledges to accept the joint statement issued by the three former presidents on May 15, 2026, and vows to provide full cooperation and support in implementing the objectives outlined therein.
