Speaking at the gathering, President Solih stated that the Maldivian people elected a new leader in 2023 with the hope of securing a better future than the circumstances at the time. He further noted that the public granted the government a supermajority in the 2024 parliamentary elections specifically to provide them with the opportunity to fulfill their campaign pledges.
However, President Solih alleged that given the current state of the nation, the administration has failed to fulfill its pledges, asserting that the government has now shifted toward authoritarianism. He further stated that the independence of state institutions has been completely compromised and that the judiciary is being subjected to undue influence. Additionally, he noted that citizens' fundamental rights are being eroded, while the space for press freedom and freedom of expression continues to shrink.
The current administration has transformed into an authoritarian regime. The independence of state institutions has been completely eroded, while the judiciary is being subjected to systemic influence. Fundamental rights have been entirely stripped away. There is no longer space for independent journalism, and the freedoms of expression and assembly have been stifled. Furthermore, the powers of the Parliament have been effectively neutralized.Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih
Furthermore, President Solih stated that the freedom of assembly has been eroded and the powers of the People's Majlis have been undermined. He noted that anyone speaking out against government policies is being imprisoned, and called on President Dr. Muizzu to immediately release all journalists currently in detention, as well as those arrested during protests.
