The interim chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and Member of Parliament for the Hanimaadhoo constituency, Abdul Ghafoor Moosa, has stated that the entire population of the Maldives is effectively trapped in a large prison. He further asserted that the public has run out of options and that a change in government is now necessary.
Speaking at a campaign rally held in Male' on Monday night for former Addu City Mayor Sodiq, who is contesting the North Hithadhoo constituency seat, Ghafoor stated that Maldivians wake up every day to news of some alarming incident occurring in the country. The lawmaker noted that a climate of fear currently prevails across the nation and accused the government of ignoring the voices of the people.
Since this burdensome administration took office, we have not had a single day of peace. The public is overwhelmed with anxiety and distress, leading to the current state of affairs. The country is no longer functioning within a stable framework. The people of the Maldives are deeply disillusioned and feel hopeless. This is precisely why this government must be changed. It is clear that those in power do not understand the message the public has sent. They have failed to grasp it entirely. The people demanded that the government stop interfering with local councils and cease its attempts to undermine the Parliament. Despite failing on a massive scale, this administration remains oblivious to the public's outcry against them. The interim Chairperson of the MDP and Member of Parliament for the Hanimaadhoo constituency, Abdul Ghafoor Moosa.
Ghafoor stated that, given the current situation, it is time to launch street protests. He emphasized the necessity of a change in government, asserting that this goal would be achieved through collective action. He further noted that the entire MDP stands united in this endeavor. To strengthen the work of the Parliament, he urged the constituents of the district to elect Sodiq.
Ghafoor stated that during the first two years of this administration, the government has been allocated more public funds than any previous government in history. He noted that while 170 billion Rufiyaa was provided over these two years, the administration has also incurred a debt of 43 billion Rufiyaa. Despite receiving such substantial funding, he alleged that the government has failed to deliver any meaningful results for the citizens, claiming instead that the entirety of the funds has been exhausted through theft and corruption.
Ghafoor stated that while the current administration continues to propagate falsehoods, they claim to have settled outstanding loans; however, these repayments are being financed by acquiring even more debt. He further alleged that the government has depleted the public's funds and warned that its continued tenure would result in irreparable damage to the national treasury.
