Police on Sunday night obstructed a protest held in Male' by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), calling for the release of detained *Adhadhu* journalists Mohamed Shahuzan and Leevan Ali Nasir.
This protest is part of a series of activities organized by the party to advocate for press freedom.
The MDP protest commenced near the party’s headquarters on Chandhanee Magu. Following a gathering at the headquarters, protesters moved onto the street and attempted to march toward Majeedhee Magu; however, a large police presence cordoned off the area, blocking the demonstrators from advancing further.
Protesters gathered in front of the party office, chanting slogans and demanding the immediate release of imprisoned journalists. Furthermore, they called for the release of all individuals detained by police during recent MDP-led demonstrations advocating for press freedom.
Despite several attempts by protesters to gather and voice their concerns on the streets, police obstructed their efforts and denied them the opportunity to demonstrate. It was further noted that authorities repeatedly issued warnings that force would be used to disperse the crowd.
Concluding Sunday night's protest, the MDP announced plans to hold an even larger demonstration on Monday night. This upcoming protest is scheduled to take place following the inaugural meeting between representatives of three former presidents: Mohamed Nasheed, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, and Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
