Opposition sweeps local leadership while Thinadhoo City is left behind in limbo
MDP has secured both mayoral and deputy mayoral positions in four of the five major cities following the swearing-in of the fifth local council term. While Male, Addu, Fuvahmulah, and Kulhudhuffushi successfully elected their leadership via secret ballot, Thinadhoo City remains the only urban center yet to appoint a deputy mayor. This term sees the return of several incumbent mayors as the public looks for improved productivity and faster service delivery.

Meekail Mohamed Riyaz, the councilor for the Central Henveiru constituency, has been elected as the Deputy Mayor of Male' City following an internal vote by the MDP. Meanwhile, Mohamed Shuau was elected to the post of Deputy Mayor of Addu City, while the council chose Mohamed Lirar to serve as the Deputy Mayor of Fuvahmulah City. Additionally, Ahmed Abdullah was elected as the Deputy Mayor of Kulhudhuffushi City. | RaajjeMV
In strict accordance with the Administrative Divisions of the Maldives Decentralization Act, the swearing-in ceremonies for Mayors and Councilors chosen for the fifth term of local councils were carried out with great fanfare right across Maldives. Immediately following these grand events, voting sessions were organized to pick Deputy Mayors, a move meant to reinforce the daily governance of the nation's primary urban hubs.
Monopoly on urban power
As it stands, Deputy Mayors have officially been chosen in four of the most prominent cities throughout Maldives. Up to this point, Thinadhoo City remains the lone urban center that has completely failed to pick a Deputy Mayor. Looking at the freshly minted leadership, representatives belonging to the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) managed to lock down both the Mayoral and Deputy Mayoral seats in all four of these major cities.
During these landmark events hosted on Sunday, every single chosen Mayor, City Councilor and Island Councilor formally recited their oaths of office. On top of that, individuals representing the Women's Development Committees (WDC) officially penned their declarations. As soon as the swearing-in formalities wrapped up, the respective City Councils gathered for their inaugural official sessions to select their Deputy Mayors using a secret ballot system, exactly as outlined by council rules.
Capital control and southern strongholds
Up in the capital Malé City, Adam Azim from MDP took his official oath of office to kick off his second consecutive term as Mayor. Right after the event, Meekail Mohamed Riyaz, who serves as the councilor representing the Central Henveiru constituency, secured the Deputy Mayor post through an internal MDP voting process. Because MDP commands a massive, undeniable majority within the Malé City Council, Meekail easily grabbed the job with the undivided backing of the city councilors.
Down in the southernmost region of Addu City, Ali Nizar of MDP was officially sworn into office to begin his second consecutive term as Mayor. Throughout the inaugural gathering of the Addu City Council, Mohamed Shuaau was selected to fill the Deputy Mayor position through a secret ballot. This victory signifies Shuaau’s second separate stint acting as the Deputy Mayor of Addu. Being a urban center that boasts historically fierce MDP backing, the political party easily retained total dominance over the council for this current term as well.
Consistency in the middle and the north
Over in Fuvahmulah City, Ismail Rafeeq from MDP took his oath of office to launch his second consecutive term as Mayor. The sitting council voted for Mohamed Liraar to work right alongside him in the capacity of Deputy Mayor. Local inhabitants voiced their expectations that these specific two figures will take a central role in driving the development initiatives of the city forward.
Up in the northern economic center of Kulhudhuffushi City, Mohamed Athif of MDP was formally sworn in to begin his second consecutive term as Mayor. During the inaugural meeting of that council, Ahmed Abdulla was successfully chosen as the Deputy Mayor via secret ballot. Serving as the grandest city in the northern region, Kulhudhuffushi’s local government is destined to keep running under the umbrella of MDP guidelines throughout this entire term.
The odd one out
In the most recently crowned urban center of the Maldives, Gaaf Dhaal Thinadhoo City, Saud Hussain was officially sworn into office for his second consecutive term as Mayor. However, completely unlike the political landscape seen in every other city, the Thinadhoo City Council has completely failed to choose a Deputy Mayor. The formal vote to fill this vacant slot is pushed off to be held during future council gatherings.
The formal operations of the fifth term of local councils are now officially underway. The electorate of the Maldives has explicitly handed a second term to every single MDP Mayor. Matching the party's ultimate agenda, Deputy Mayors who are supposedly meant to look out for the public's well-being have been successfully put in place in every single locality except one. Ultimately, the biggest hope among the ordinary populace is for these city bureaucracies to somehow become more productive and for vital public services to be delivered at a much faster pace than before.
