Presidential appointee Yazmeed Mohamed resigns as Vice President of JSC
Yazmeed Mohamed has resigned from his position as Vice President of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) while the commission was investigating a disciplinary matter against him. The allegations involve a leaked audio recording in which he purportedly attempted to influence the outcome of a criminal case and pressured individuals to vote for specific candidates in an election. Although Yazmeed previously served as a member of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), he notably lacks prior experience within the judiciary.

Yazmeed Mohamed has resigned from his position as the Vice President of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).
Yazmeed is a member appointed to the Commission by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
While it has been confirmed that Yazmeed has resigned from his post, the official reason for his departure has not yet been disclosed. However, the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) had been investigating an ethics complaint against him. The probe was launched following the emergence of an audio recording in which he allegedly gave instructions to influence the outcome of a criminal case and directed how votes should be cast in a council election.
In a recently leaked audio clip circulating on social media, a voice can be heard urging people not to vote for the PNC in the local council elections. The recording also suggests that individuals arrested in a drug-related case could be cleared before their matter reaches the Prosecutor General’s Office. It remains unclear whether Yazmeed’s resignation was a move to evade the implications of this controversy.
Yazmeed was elected Vice President of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) on October 23, 2024. He was appointed to the position following the resignation of the previous incumbent, High Court Judge Mohamed Niyaz. Yazmeed was first appointed to the commission in February last year, succeeding veteran lawyer Mohamed Sameer.
Yazmeed has previously contested the parliamentary elections under the PPM/PNC coalition ticket. Additionally, he served as a member of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) during the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen. Notably, Yazmeed does not possess any prior experience within the judicial sector.
It is noteworthy that Yazmeed’s appointment to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) as the President’s member came at a time when the commission was investigating cases involving three Supreme Court justices.
