Three former presidents have asserted their commitment to holding those involved in corruption accountable.
Responding to a reporter's question during a press conference held Friday night following a meeting between former presidents Mohamed Nasheed, Abdulla Yameen, and Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Nasheed stated that corruption remains a significant barrier to development and pledged to work against it.
In my view, President Muizzu will have no choice but to listen. God willing, we will steer our efforts in that direction. Corruption remains a significant barrier to development. Consequently, we are considering and advocating for necessary constitutional amendments and structural reforms. I believe that within the framework of these discussions, we will be able to address these critical issues.Former President Mohamed Nasheed
Addressing the issue of corruption, Yameen stated that there has never been a government entirely free of corruption in any era. However, he provided assurances that he would not tolerate corruption if he became aware of it.
This is about corruption, isn't it? It is a topic we all discuss. However, the reality we must accept is that at no point in history, in any country, has there ever been a government completely free of corruption. Therefore, the answer we three presidents can provide is that we will not tolerate corruption. I believe the essence of President Nasheed’s remarks is that we will not knowingly tolerate any act of corruption. We have the courage to investigate and hold anyone who engages in corruption accountable.Former President Abdulla Yameen
Furthermore, all three former presidents expressed their concerns regarding the current state of the nation. They emphasized that to improve the situation, President Muizzu must heed these concerns and work towards finding a resolution.
