Former MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail has called upon the three former presidents currently in the opposition to unite and work together to save the Maldives.
In a post on X on Wednesday, Fayyaz stated that President Muizzu has violated his presidential oath and has lost his sense of reason. Fayyaz further asserted that the President is currently holding the entire state apparatus under his absolute control.
Referring to the current state of the nation, Fayyaz stated that differing ideologies must be set aside to launch nationwide protests against the government and voice the public's discontent. He emphasized that it is time for opposition leaders—specifically former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, former President Mohamed Nasheed, and former President Abdulla Yameen—to unite and step forward to save the country.
Expressing his unwavering commitment to working alongside the three former presidents, Fayyaz called upon impartial judges and independent institutions to take immediate action to secure the release of the detained journalists.
Widespread condemnation has followed the imprisonment of two *Adhadhu* journalists, Leevan Ali Naseer and Mohamed Shahuzan, on May 12, 2026. In response, many citizens have taken to various social media platforms to call for mass street protests. These calls urge the public to mobilize in order to save the nation from what they describe as President Muizzu’s "authoritarian" rule.
