MDP will protest daily for the rights of journalists: Nasheed
Former President Nasheed announced that the MDP will hold daily protests to defend media freedom and oppose the arrest of journalists, warning during a Wednesday night rally that government intimidation of the press would negatively impact the nation's economy. While protesters demanded the immediate release of detained journalists, police used force to disperse the gathering, resulting in the arrest of ten individuals.

Former President Mohamed Nasheed has stated that the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) will hold daily protests to advocate for the rights of journalists.
Speaking at a protest held on Wednesday night, Nasheed stated that the freedom of expression and freedom of the press are fundamental rights guaranteed to the people under the Maldives' "Green Constitution." He reiterated that these rights must not be infringed upon.
However, Nasheed stated that President Muizzu’s administration is arresting journalists in response to the questions they pose, asserting that such actions are unacceptable. He further declared that the MDP would continue to protest daily in defense of journalists' rights.
Furthermore, Nasheed stated that the negative impacts of this situation will become evident, leading to a significant destabilization of the Maldives' economic self-sufficiency.
A large number of citizens participated in a protest held on Wednesday night. Demonstrators called for President Muizzu’s resignation and demanded the immediate release of journalists Leevan Ali Naseer and Mohamed Shahuzan, who have been imprisoned since May 12, 2026.
Authorities reportedly arrested 10 individuals after the protest escalated and was forcibly dispersed.
