Former Presidents Mohamed Nasheed, Abdulla Yameen, and Ibrahim Mohamed Solih have called on the government to immediately cease its ongoing misconduct.
Speaking at a press conference following a historic meeting between three former presidents, President Nasheed expressed his profound regret that, as the current "Green Constitution" nears its 20th anniversary, journalists are once again forced to take to the streets to defend their rights. He warned that press freedom in the country has reached a perilous turning point.
President Nasheed emphasized the necessity of a collective effort to address and combat these issues.
During the meeting, President Yameen stated that the Maldivian people are enduring immense hardship and noted that the media is facing significant attacks through the judicial system. He further emphasized the necessity of holding the government accountable, remarked that the current administration is displaying the characteristics of an authoritarian regime.
Former President Yameen stated that enough is enough, and it is time to stand up against the current administration and advocate for the rights of journalists. He further noted that all three presidents have reached an agreement to work together without compromise, guided by specific policies.
During the meeting, President Solih stated that they would remain steadfast in their efforts, doing everything possible to protect the nation from the challenges and difficulties imposed by President Muizzu. He further asserted that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration has openly infringed upon the fundamental rights guaranteed to citizens by the Constitution and continues to exert undue influence over the judiciary.
In a joint statement issued following the historic meeting of the three presidents, it was highlighted that press freedom is being obstructed and journalists are being subjected to imprisonment.
Furthermore, it was noted that the general living conditions of the public have deteriorated, the economy has weakened, and the prices of goods have multiplied. The statement also highlighted that despite these circumstances, government wasteful spending remains excessive.
Furthermore, the statement highlighted that numerous irregularities have taken root within the administration, noting that the government has failed to rectify these issues. The statement also emphasized a loss of public confidence in the government's ability to safeguard state funds and assets. It further noted that the people's power is being eroded, and the democratic principles that Maldivians have spent years striving for are now being systematically dismantled.
