Former Presidents Mohamed Nasheed, Abdulla Yameen, and Ibrahim Mohamed Solih have announced a mutual agreement to work together to steer the nation back onto the right course.
In a joint statement issued following a historic meeting between the three former presidents, they alleged that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration has blatantly infringed upon the fundamental rights guaranteed to citizens by the Constitution and continues to exert undue influence over the judiciary. The statement further highlighted that the government has undermined the authority of the People’s Majlis and compromised the independence of state institutions.
The joint statement by the three former presidents further highlighted that press freedom is being obstructed and that journalists are being subjected to imprisonment.
Furthermore, it was noted that the general living conditions of the public have deteriorated, the economy has weakened, and the prices of goods have increased manifold. The statement further highlighted that despite these circumstances, government wasteful spending remains excessive.
Furthermore, the statement highlighted that numerous malpractices have taken root within the administration, which the government has failed to rectify. It further noted a loss of public confidence in the safe and secure management of state funds and assets. The statement also emphasized that the people’s power is being eroded, and the democratic principles that Maldivians have spent years striving for are now being systematically dismantled.
The statement confirmed that the three presidents have agreed to work together to bring the country back onto the right path. Furthermore, they called upon the government to release journalists currently in detention and to halt the unlawful trials being conducted against them.
This marks the first time the three former presidents have met in such a manner.
