Police launch investigation into attack on Mayor Azim one day after incident
Police have launched an investigation into an assault on Male City Mayor Adam Azim, while the President's Office issued a statement reaffirming the government's commitment to ensuring a safe environment for all citizens. The leadership of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has also called for a thorough inquiry into the incident, which occurred during a protest organized by the party.

Police have confirmed that an investigation is underway into an assault on Male’ City Mayor Adam Azim during an opposition MDP protest held in the capital on Friday night.
Police informed the media that they are investigating an incident where an individual allegedly attempted to assault the Mayor of Male' City during a protest held in the capital on the night of April 24, 2026.
Police have confirmed that an investigation is underway into the assault on the Mayor, which occurred a day earlier. Meanwhile, the President's Office stated on Saturday that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has viewed video footage showing an individual attempting to attack Azim.
More than 18 hours after the incident, the President's Office issued a statement saying that the President strongly condemns the attempted attack on the Mayor.
The statement further noted that as the Mayor of Male' City is an official elected directly by the people, any attack or obstruction directed at him or any other political leader—whether during their political activities or in their private lives—is unacceptable. The President also provided assurances that the government remains committed to preventing such incidents and ensuring a safe, secure environment for every citizen, free from fear.
On Friday night, two individuals suddenly intercepted a protest march as it was passing the Galolhu Cemetery on Bodurasgefaanu Magu. The pair reportedly attempted to assault Mayor Azim during the encounter.
During the incident, one of the individuals attempted to shove Mayor Azim and knock him to the ground. However, other protesters intervened and restrained the two men before any further assault could occur.
Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, former President Mohamed Nasheed, and the leadership of the MDP have condemned the matter, calling on relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation.
