Former President Solih calls for necessary protection for Mayor Azim following attack
Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has strongly condemned the attack on Male’ City Mayor Adam Azim during a rally organized by the MDP. The former president called on the police and relevant authorities to conduct a swift investigation into the incident and ensure the Mayor is provided with full protection. He further emphasized that it is the state's responsibility to maintain a safe environment for peaceful political activities; however, the police have yet to issue an official comment regarding the matter.

Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has called on the relevant authorities to provide full protection to Male’ City Mayor Adam Azim, following an assault on the Mayor during a protest organized by the MDP.
On Friday night, as protesters were marching along Bodurasgefaanu Magu near the Galolhu Cemetery, two individuals suddenly intercepted the crowd. The pair then attempted to assault Mayor Azim.
Specifically, one of the individuals attempted to shove Mayor Azim and knock him to the ground. However, other protesters managed to restrain the two individuals before any further assault could take place.
In a post on X on Saturday, former President Solih strongly condemned the attack on Male' City Mayor Azim, which occurred during a peaceful march organized by the MDP in the capital on Friday night.
He called upon the police and relevant authorities to conduct a swift investigation into the attack and to ensure that full protection is provided to the Mayor of Male'.
Furthermore, Solih stated that the rights to assembly, freedom of expression, and engaging in political activities are fundamental liberties guaranteed to everyone by the Constitution. He further emphasized that it is the responsibility of the relevant authorities to ensure a safe and secure environment for conducting peaceful political activities.
In addition to former President Solih, MDP’s interim chairperson Abdul Ghafoor Moosa and other senior party officials have strongly condemned the attack on Mayor Azim, calling for a thorough investigation into the matter.
However, the police were unavailable for comment regarding the matter. Authorities have yet to disclose whether the assailant has been identified or if an investigation into the incident is currently underway.
