Former President Mohamed Nasheed has stated that his current efforts are focused solely on bringing about a change in President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration, and that any other considerations will only be addressed once the government has been replaced.
President Nasheed made these remarks on Saturday while meeting with members of the public during his ongoing campaign visit to Addu City for the chairperson election. He stated that he felt compelled to leave his previous position in Ghana and return to the Maldives because this is his and his children’s nation, and he could not stand by while the country’s affairs were being mismanaged.
"God willing, I will achieve this. I entered this race to bring about a change in government. I will certainly remain until that is accomplished. Only after achieving that will I consider any other matter," Nasheed said.
While expressing dissatisfaction with the current administration's performance, President Nasheed highlighted the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) as the most effective platform for national reform. He further noted that the current government has failed to deliver for the public, leading him to advocate across various platforms for a change in leadership.
The main opposition party, MDP, has scheduled its chairperson election for June 12. Former President Mohamed Nasheed, Galolhu South MP Mickail Ahmed Naseem, and former MP Alhan Fahmy have announced their candidacy for the position. These candidates have already commenced their respective election campaigns.
