An investigation has been launched following the death of an individual while in police custody.
A case has emerged involving the death of an individual who was taken into police custody on Thursday. The family was reportedly informed of the death on Friday afternoon. According to the family, they had not been notified of his initial arrest.
The family informed RaajjeMV that although he had been arrested on drug-related charges in the past, the police had always notified them of his detention. However, they noted that on this occasion, no such notification was provided.
The family stated that they received a phone call on Friday afternoon informing them that he had passed away. According to the family, police reported that he was rushed to the hospital after his condition suddenly deteriorated while in custody, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
He was reportedly taken to the police station yesterday afternoon. We were completely unaware of this, as the family was never informed of his detention. We only found out today when we received a sudden phone call at 1:30 p.m. During the call, they informed us that while he was in police custody, he suffered a sudden medical emergency and was pronounced dead shortly after being brought to the hospital.Family of man who died in police custody
The family stated that they rushed to the hospital immediately upon hearing the news, but noted that the police refused to answer any of their questions. According to the family, they inquired about the reasons for his detention and why they had not been notified earlier; however, the police declined to provide any information.
The family stated that even after four hours at the hospital, they had not been allowed to see the deceased's body. They noted that when they requested to see him, they were told it was not possible, and police further informed them that the body would not be released to the family.
"They said no. They told us we couldn't see the body yet. Since we have a relatively large family, we are from N. Velidhoo. We had already arranged a speedboat from here, and everyone back home was ready to travel. However, after the boat had already cleared the Kaafu Atoll area, they informed us that the body could not be released. They stated that after conducting scans, the body would have to be sent abroad for a post-mortem examination. We were told the remains would only be handed over after 14 days."Family of the man who died in police custody
