The President's Office has stated that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has viewed a video showing an individual attempting to assault Male' City Mayor Adam Azim during a protest held in the capital by the Maldivian Democratic Party.
In a statement issued by the President's Office more than 18 hours after the incident, it was noted that the President had viewed the video of the attack. The statement emphasized that His Excellency condemns the attempted assault on the Mayor in the strongest possible terms. The President further highlighted that as the Mayor of Male' City is an official directly elected by the people, any attempt to attack or obstruct him—or any other political leader—in either their professional or personal life is unacceptable. The President reassured the public that the government remains committed to preventing such incidents and ensuring a safe, secure environment for every citizen, free from fear.
Furthermore, the President's Office has shared a statement issued to the media by the Chief Government Spokesperson, Mohamed Hussain Shareef, regarding the incident.
In the statement, the spokesperson expressed surprise over Mayor Adam Azim’s allegations that the government was behind the attack, noting that it remains entirely unclear what evidence or basis the Mayor used to make such claims. The spokesperson further categorically denied any government involvement, assuring all parties that the administration would never engage in such actions.
Furthermore, he asserted that Mayor Adam Azim’s statements were categorically false, noting that leveling such baseless accusations is a deeply unprofessional and reprehensible act.
Furthermore, the police expressed regret that no official authority had reported the incident to them by the time the statement was issued. They emphasized that as the institution legally mandated to ensure community safety and security, the failure to report such incidents hinders their ability to fulfill their professional responsibilities.
The spokesperson stated that since the police first encountered the video of the attack on social media, they have been investigating the matter on their own initiative.
The spokesperson noted that the Mayor of Male' City is entitled to state security upon request, given the nature of the position. The spokesperson further stated that the police continuously conduct threat assessments to evaluate the level of risk faced by high-ranking state officials. If any such assessment indicates a potential threat to an individual, the police will take the initiative to arrange the necessary security measures.
