The Addu City Council has called for arrangements to be made to provide fuel at lower rates through Fuel Supplies Maldives (FSM), following a recent hike in fuel prices across the city.
In a statement released on Sunday, the Addu City Council expressed profound concern over the escalating difficulties residents face in accessing essential fuel services and the sharp rise in fuel prices.
Furthermore, the statement noted that the Addu City Council has been receiving complaints regarding the aging fuel dispensers at the FSM station in Gan. Due to the outdated machinery, residents are forced to spend long hours in queues to obtain services. The council highlighted that these delays result in a significant loss of time for the public, adversely affecting their daily lives and general well-being.
The Addu City Council has highlighted that Fuel Supplies Maldives (FSM) currently provides no services within the city, noting that fuel distribution is handled entirely by private companies. The Council stated that while FSM previously supplied fuel at lower rates, the discontinuation of this arrangement has forced residents to purchase fuel at significantly higher prices.
Fuel Supplies Maldives (FSM) currently retails petrol at MVR 18.56 per liter and diesel at MVR 18.68 per liter. In contrast, petrol sheds in Addu City are selling diesel for MVR 31.34 per liter and petrol for MVR 24.22 per liter. Local companies have requested that arrangements be made to allow them to sell fuel at the same rates as FSM. However, the City Council expressed deep concern that these measures have yet to be implemented.
