Male City Council to Muththalib: Government ordered market evacuation despite potential disruptions to businesses ahead of Ramadan; new stalls are currently being arranged
The Male' City Council has strongly refuted the Housing Minister's allegations of non-cooperation regarding the redevelopment of the capital's roads. The Council asserted that they are continuously working to mitigate flooding by installing world-class pumps and cleaning drainage systems, while noting that the Boduthakurufaanu Magu project is based on a council-approved concept. Furthermore, the Council dismissed the Minister's claims as false, highlighting that the ruling PNC currently holds the majority within the Council, making allegations of obstruction unfounded.

The Male' City Council has issued a strong rebuttal to allegations made by Minister of Housing, Land and Urban Development Dr. Abdulla Muththalib, who claimed the council has been uncooperative with the government's ongoing road development projects.
Speaking at Wednesday's Parliament session, the Minister criticized the Male' City Council, stating that the central government is ultimately forced to resolve issues related to flooding on the capital's streets. The Minister further accused the Male' City Council of failing to cooperate with the Boduthakurufaanu Magu redevelopment project. He noted that despite repeated written requests to remove the local market to facilitate road widening, the Council's inaction forced the project to be completed without a pavement in that area.
Responding to the matter in a post on X, the City Council’s Head of Communications, Aminath Shathufa Shafeeu, stated that the Male' City Council has acquired two world-class pumps to address flooding issues, noting that these pumps are currently fully operational. Shathufa further highlighted that although eight areas along Majeedhee Magu previously faced severe flooding due to the way the Housing Ministry had formerly managed the work, the City Council has now successfully resolved those issues.
Shatufa noted that although Majeedhee Magu was redeveloped during President Muizzu’s tenure as Housing Minister, significant modifications were required and have since been implemented under the Mayor’s guidance. To address the issue of flooding, she stated that the City Council has cleared over 45,000 drains to date. She further emphasized that this is an ongoing program. Despite the Road Development Corporation (RDC) refusing to provide the necessary road blocks and paving stones to the Council, Shatufa confirmed that road maintenance efforts are continuing without interruption.
She stated that claiming the Male' City Council is refusing to cooperate in road development is an absolute falsehood. Shatufa noted that the Boduthakurufaanu Magu project was initiated during the MDP administration. She further highlighted that all necessary work, including securing funding, designing, and planning the project, was completed during Mayor Adam Azim's tenure as the CEO of MTCC.
She highlighted that the People's National Congress (PNC) currently holds the majority in the Male' City Council as a point of primary significance. Consequently, Shatufa questioned whether the Minister was implying that a body under the full control of the PNC was refusing to cooperate with the government.
