Ahead of the three elections scheduled for April 4, new offices for the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) and Aasandha have been inaugurated in Hithadhoo, Addu City.
The office was officially inaugurated on Tuesday by the Minister of Social and Family Development, Dr. Aishath Shiham.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Aishath Shiham stated that the opening of the NSPA and Aasandha offices in Addu City will significantly reduce the need for residents to travel to Male', allowing them to complete various administrative processes locally. She further noted that these offices will provide a permanent solution to the challenges faced by residents in accessing social protection assistance and medical services through Aasandha and NSPA.
Furthermore, the Minister stated that the office's services will expand to cover the southern atolls, including Huvadhu Atoll and Fuvahmulah City. As a result, the time spent submitting documents and waiting for responses to access services provided by the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) and Aasandha will be significantly reduced.
Despite the government's claims of working to enhance Aasandha and NSPA services to ensure easier public access, a tragic case has recently surfaced involving the death of a young child. The incident occurred after NSPA reportedly denied authorization to procure a specialized medical tube essential for the child's survival.
Following the reforms introduced by the current administration to the Aasandha scheme, public outcry has intensified over increasing difficulties in securing medical coverage and essential medications. Despite a surge in reports alleging negligence, both the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) and Aasandha have remained silent, failing to address any of these growing concerns.
Amidst growing public criticism over significant negligence in healthcare services, many are alleging that the opening of NSPA and Aasandha offices in Hithadhoo, Addu City, is a strategic move tied to the upcoming Local Council and Women's Development Committee elections, as well as the scheduled referendum.
