The Male' City Council has submitted a formal complaint to Parliament after the Auditor General's Office failed to conduct a requested audit of the council, despite repeated requests.
In a letter addressed to the Speaker of the People’s Majlis, Abdul Raheem Abdulla, the Member of Parliament for North Galolhu, Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudoo), has brought to the parliament's attention the prolonged delay in auditing the Male’ City Council.
In the letter, Ibrahim highlighted that the Male' City Council—the entity responsible for managing the financial benefits of properties, lands, and public resources in the capital—has not undergone a state audit, nor have any such reports been disclosed, for approximately the past ten years. Furthermore, the letter alleged that the Auditor General has failed to fulfill the mandate to audit the institution, as required for all state bodies under Law No. 4/2007 (Audit Act).
Ibrahim emphasized that it is the responsibility of the People's Majlis to clarify why the Male' City Council has not been audited to date and to take the necessary measures promptly. Consequently, Ibrahim has requested that a meeting of the Public Accounts Committee be organized as soon as possible to investigate why the council has remained unaudited for so long. The request aims to ensure the audits are conducted swiftly and to push for the public release of the resulting reports.
Furthermore, as the case proceeds, a request has been made to summon the Male' City Council and the Auditor General to the committee, exercising the powers granted to the Parliament under Article 99 of the Constitution.
The City Council has requested the Auditor General’s Office to conduct an audit of the institution. This matter was submitted to Parliament after the office failed to respond to the initial request.
