PNC secures 5 seats in cities, while MDP claims 46

Provisional results of the local council elections show the opposition MDP securing a landslide victory, winning the mayoralties of all five cities and a significant majority of council seats. While the MDP dominated in Male', Addu, and Kulhudhuffushi, the ruling PNC managed to secure only five seats across all cities. Notably, the government failed to win a single seat in Fuvahmulah City, as mayors in every city were elected with more than 50 percent of the total vote.

Provisional results from Saturday's local council elections show that the People's National Congress (PNC) secured only five seats across the country's cities.

According to the provisional results released by the Elections Commission, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s ruling PNC secured only five seats. Most of these seats were won by narrow margins. In contrast, the MDP secured 46 seats, including the mayoralties of every city.

While the People's National Congress (PNC) secured five seats according to the provisional results, this figure is subject to change by the time the final results are formalized.

Male' City

In the most fiercely contested local council elections, the MDP secured a landslide victory in 16 out of the 17 constituencies in Malé City. The only seat the party failed to win was the Vilimalé constituency.

Addu City

Addu City witnessed an intense campaign during this year's local council elections. The government had consistently provided assurances that it would transform the city. However, the ruling party managed to secure only a single seat, winning the Hithadhoo Moolekede constituency. According to the preliminary results released by the Elections Commission, Ahmed Saeed won the Moolekede seat with 502 votes. The MDP candidate followed closely with 488 votes, marking a narrow margin of just 14 votes.

Kulhudhuffushi City

The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has once again secured a majority in Kulhudhuffushi City. The party won all but one seat in the election. The only seat the MDP failed to secure was the North West constituency.

Thinadhoo City

Thinadhoo City Council will mark its debut as a newly established city council in this year's local council elections. The city witnessed a highly competitive election following an intense campaign period. However, the residents of Thinadhoo City delivered a resounding rejection to the government. The ruling PNC managed to secure only two seats in the city, winning the South-West and South-Central constituencies.

Fuvahmulah City

The government failed to secure any seats in Fuvahmulah City. The main opposition, MDP, won all but one constituency in the city. The only seat the MDP did not win was the Dhadimagu constituency, which was the only seat the party did not contest.

Incumbent mayors from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) have successfully retained their seats across all five cities in the Maldives. According to provisional election results, every mayor secured their re-election with more than 50 percent of the total vote.
