President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has appointed Mohamed Hussain Shareef (Mundhu) as the Chief Government Spokesperson at the President's Office, at the rank of Minister.
Mundhu was appointed to the post following the vacancy left by Heena Waleed, who was appointed as the Minister of Arts, Culture, and Heritage on Tuesday. Prior to his appointment as the President's Office Spokesperson, Mundhu served as the Maldivian Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates.
Mundhu was dismissed from his post on April 6, following the leak of an audio recording in which his mother, Central Maafannu MP Asma Rasheed, was heard speaking against the government. Along with him, Dr. Salma Rasheed, the Maldives' Permanent Representative to Geneva, was also removed from her position. Dr. Salma is the younger sister of MP Asma. However, Dr. Salma was later reinstated to her post.
Mohamed Hussain Shareef has previously served in several high-level capacities, including as a Cabinet Minister and as the Maldivian Ambassador to various foreign nations. Furthermore, he held the position of Chief Government Spokesman at the President’s Office from 2005 to 2007, and served as the Presidential Spokesperson from 2007 to 2008. He also played a pivotal role during the establishment of the Strategic Communications Unit at the President’s Office. Most recently, he served as the Ambassador of the Maldives to the United Arab Emirates.
