"2026 Presidential Address is a lackluster imitation of statements delivered over the past two years"
In the official opposition response to the 2026 Presidential Address, Minority Leader Ibrahim Nazil asserted that the statement failed to fulfill the constitutional requirement of providing a comprehensive overview of the nation's current state. Representing the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Nazil criticized the government’s perceived incompetence, stating that it has led to systemic failures across economic and social sectors while dismissing the address as a repetition of unrealistic promises. Furthermore, the MDP highlighted the administration's inability to resolve ongoing housing and healthcare crises, while expressing concern over the weakening of the Maldives' international diplomatic relations.

The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has characterized the 2026 Presidential Address as a lackluster imitation of the speeches delivered in 2024 and 2025.
During Tuesday's parliamentary sitting, Minority Leader and MP for South Hithadhoo constituency, Ibrahim Nazil, delivered the Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) official response to the Presidential Address.
Delivering the response to the Presidential Address, Nazil stated that the most appropriate and direct rebuttal to the 2026 Presidential Address is the fact that it failed to meet the mandatory requirements stipulated in the Constitution.
Nazil stated that the Presidential Address failed to outline the current state of the nation. He further noted that the speech lacked any clear recommendations or necessary actions to improve the country's situation.
Therefore, I must state that the 2026 Presidential Address is merely a faded imitation of those delivered in 2024 and 2025. I describe it as a faded copy because the same visionary rhetoric presented before this honorable chamber and the Maldivian people over the past two years has simply been repackaged and delivered to this Parliament once again.Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for the South Hithadhoo constituency, Ibrahim Nazil.
Delivering the response to the Presidential Address, Nazil stated that while the President has failed to fulfill any of his prior commitments, he has instead offered a new set of deadlines and empty promises. The Member further noted that the President failed to address the significant challenges facing the nation or outline the specific policies the government intends to implement to resolve them.
Describing the current PNC administration as the most incompetent government in Maldivian history, Nazil stated that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has failed significantly on both economic and social fronts. The MP further noted that the administration is resorting to lies and deception to conceal these failures from the public.
Nazil stated that no matter how many Maldivian heroes were invoked during the two-hour speech, it could not mask the government's incompetence. He remarked that the public is well aware of the country's current situation and that the hardships they are enduring cannot be misrepresented to them.
In its official response to the Presidential Address, the MDP highlighted the public's growing concerns over the deteriorating state of the nation's healthcare system. The opposition also noted that the government has yet to take meaningful action to address the housing crisis, while further pointing to a significant decline in the country's fiscal and economic stability.
Furthermore, the response highlighted that the country's reputation has been tarnished and international relations have weakened due to the current administration's foreign policy.
Nazil stated that although the President is mandated to deliver a presidential address to Parliament outlining the current state of the nation and his vision for improvement, it is regrettable that he failed to do so, instead presenting the assembly with a series of hollow and unrealistic dreams.
