Mirza Shiyam, the President of the People’s National Congress (PNC) steering committee for the Central Henveiru constituency, has defected to the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
He officially joined the MDP on Thursday during the party's "door-to-door" campaign event held in the South Maafannu constituency.
Welcoming Mirza to the MDP, former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih stated in an interview with RaajjeMV that the decision by senior PNC figures to join the MDP at such a critical juncture is a very positive sign. The former President further noted that this development provides a significant boost to the MDP team as they prepare for the upcoming local council elections.
"This clearly demonstrates that the PNC lacks any form of policy. Moving forward, we will continue to see the MDP grow even stronger and more resilient," President Solih stated.
Male' City Mayor and mayoral candidate Adam Azim stated that Mirza's decision to join the MDP represents a significant boost for the party at this juncture. Azim further expressed high confidence that more senior figures from the PNC will continue to cross over to the MDP in the near future.
Mirza told RaajjeMV that he joined the MDP because he believes it is the best path forward for the people. He also urged the public to reject the proposal to combine the two elections and called on voters to support MDP candidates in the upcoming Local Council and Women's Development Committee elections.
