Meekail responds to Rifau for interrupting speech: People are laughing at the member; was the election won by distributing jobs?
During a debate on proposed amendments to the Land Transport Act, MP Meekail Naseem criticized the ruling party for failing to prioritize critical legislation concerning public safety. When MP Rifau interrupted the proceedings with laughter, Meekail delivered a sharp rebuke, citing recent election results as a mandate for the government to listen to the people's concerns. The presiding chair subsequently cautioned MP Rifau for disruptive behavior that undermined parliamentary order.

Meekail Ahmed Naseem, the Member of Parliament for South Galolhu, delivered a sharp rebuke to South Maafannu MP Abdulla Rifau (Bochey) after the latter interrupted him with laughter during a floor debate on a bill.
The preliminary debate on a bill to amend the Land Transport Act, introduced by North Galolhu MP Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudoo), was held during Tuesday’s parliamentary sitting.
While MP Meekail was debating the bill, MP Rifau interrupted him and caused a disturbance on the floor. Responding to the disruption, Meekail asserted that he alone would determine the content of his speech. He further noted that the public had already heard the MDP members' message, a sentiment he claimed was clearly reflected in the results of the recent election.
Meekail noted that this sentiment was particularly evident within MP Rifau’s own constituency. Consequently, Meekail urged Rifau to listen to the concerns raised by fellow members as well as the voices of the public.
Meekail stated that instead of attempting to obstruct members from debating critical issues such as road safety, which directly impact public lives, Rifau should focus on bringing the concerns of his constituents to the Parliament.
MP Rifau responded to MP Meekail's remarks with laughter. Meekail countered strongly, asserting that, judging by the election results, it is the public that is currently laughing at the member.
The public is laughing at the results. The constituents of South Maafannu are laughing at their representative in response to the outcome. Was this election won by distributing jobs? Was it won through the power and influence of the government?Meekail Ahmed Naseem, Member of Parliament for the South Galolhu constituency
Member Rifau once again interrupted Member Meekail's remarks. Consequently, the Chair advised Rifau to respect the parliamentary rules of procedure.
Debating the proposed amendment to the Land Transport Act, Meekail stated that while the Judiciary Committee has spent nine months reviewing an amendment to the Penal Code aimed at protecting public lives, such fundamental legislation appears to hold no importance for the current parliament, despite the PNC holding a supermajority.
