The Elections Commission has scheduled the by-election for the North Hithadhoo constituency of the People's Majlis for Saturday, June 6, 2026.

This election is being held following a Supreme Court ruling that declared the North Hithadhoo constituency seat vacant.

The Commission stated that it has decided to hold a by-election to elect a member for the North Hithadhoo constituency of the 20th People's Majlis, following a Supreme Court ruling in case number 2025/SC-C/01 declaring the seat vacant.

The application window for candidates wishing to contest the election will be open from 10:00 AM on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, until 3:00 PM on Wednesday, April 29, 2026. The Elections Commission stated that applications can be submitted via email or in person at the Commission’s headquarters.

The Commission stated that if forms are submitted via email, the total size of all files combined must not exceed 10 MB. According to the Commission, those submitting forms in person should visit the Elections Commission’s main office, located on the 5th floor of the Port Complex on Hilaalee Magu.

The eligibility criteria for candidates seeking election to the People's Majlis include being a Maldivian citizen who does not hold foreign citizenship, being a Muslim of the Sunni school of thought, having attained 18 years of age, and being of sound mind.

The Commission stated that every candidate contesting the election must appoint an official election agent and pay an administrative fee of MVR 5,000. Independent candidates are required to obtain the support of at least 50 individuals aged 18 and over from within their respective constituency.

Voting for the by-election is scheduled to take place on Saturday, June 6, 2026, from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. The ballot counting process will commence on the same day, following a 30-minute interval after the polls close. According to the Commission, the official results of the election are slated to be announced on Monday, June 8, 2026.

The Elections Commission has announced that application forms and the necessary documentation for candidates seeking to contest the election are available at the Commission. Additionally, the forms can be downloaded from the Commission’s official website.

The Supreme Court on Sunday ruled that Mohamed Sinan, the Member of Parliament for the North Hithadhoo constituency, has lost his seat. The court declared his seat vacant due to his failure to settle a proven debt.
