The Chairperson of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Abdul Ghafoor Moosa, has stated that the public has expressed a lack of confidence in the government and suggested that it would be best for the administration to resign.
He made these remarks while speaking at the ceremony held on Saturday to celebrate the success of the "Heyvalla Thayyaaru" event.
He stated that the government suffered a crushing defeat in the public referendum, noting that the 70 percent "no" vote clearly demonstrates a total loss of public confidence. He further remarked that in other parts of the world, leaders typically resign when faced with such a decisive outcome in a referendum. Ghafoor emphasized the need for the party to unite and strengthen its efforts moving forward.
"I will always strive for truth and justice. I extend my sincere gratitude to everyone who voted for us and contributed to this victory," Ghafoor stated during a gathering held on Monday night.
He stated that the public has accused the government of stealing from the people's funds, and that their message clearly indicates a breakdown in the rule of law. Furthermore, he noted that the citizens have expressed their firm opposition to the ongoing corruption within the administration. He also highlighted the public's condemnation of the government's continuous interference in the judiciary.
According to the provisional results of the recently concluded elections, the MDP has secured 46 seats.
