The President of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Abdulla Shahid, has called on Members of Parliament to break free from the shackles placed upon them and stand in solidarity with the people.
Shahid made these remarks while speaking at an event held by the MDP at Artificial Beach to celebrate the party's success in the recent Local Council and Women's Development Committee (WDC) elections, held under the slogan "Heyvalla Thayyaaru" (Ready and Prepared). He stated that the results of these elections demonstrate that the public has expressed a vote of no confidence in the government. Furthermore, Shahid called upon the people to stand up in defense of the Constitution.
Shahid stated that this achievement was the result of a significant collective effort rather than the work of individuals. He noted that it reflects the determination shown by the courageous general members of the MDP to bring hopeful change to the Maldives. Shahid further emphasized that the current objective must be to maintain unity and complete the work started to paint the entire country in "golden yellow."
"Our focus must be on defeating this administration, bringing about a change in government, and steering the country back onto the right path. Set aside your differences and unite. The hopes of the Maldivian people in the 'Tilafath' (scales) are far greater. Stand together," Shahid said.
Shahid emphasized that the MDP cannot afford to step back. He stated that the public desires for the party to move forward united and secure victory in the presidential election. Shahid further asserted that now is the time for everyone to work together to defeat the current administration. He noted that 70% of the electorate rejected the government in the local council elections, describing this as clear evidence that the administration can be defeated in the upcoming presidential race.
