Addu City Mayor Ali Nizar has stated that the Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) victory in Addu, achieved despite numerous challenges, is a triumph won by the people, for the people.
Nizar made these remarks during an interview with Raajje TV. He stated that the results from Addu in Saturday's election reflect the extent of public disillusionment with the government. He further noted that the outcome demonstrates public confidence in the decisions and development plans formulated by the current council for Addu City.
"The government has severely neglected Addu. None of the promises made have been fulfilled. They have failed to find a solution to the issues facing the Link Road. The problem is that even though contracts have been signed and projects awarded to various companies, no actual work is being carried out," he said.
Nizar stated that the public has overwhelmingly rejected the government, describing the outcome as a powerful message directed at the administration. He noted that the results from all cities and major population centers clearly demonstrate the government's failure. He further asserted that despite the government's attempts to exert power and influence, the voters have proven that the public cannot be deceived.
Nizar further stated that this is the result of efforts to undermine the decentralization system. He emphasized that the needs of the people can only be met by working closely with them and that councils must be further empowered.
