Legal expert and former Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed has warned that the outcome of tomorrow's vote could potentially bring an end to the Constitution of the Maldives.
Speaking on Friday's "Fashaairu" program, Jameel noted that the "Green Constitution" was ratified during former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom's administration. He highlighted that since then, the country has been governed by Mohamed Nasheed, Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik, Abdulla Yameen, and Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. However, Jameel emphasized that none of these former leaders had ever expressed a need to circumvent or escape the constraints of the Constitution.
Furthermore, Jameel stated that the outcome of tomorrow’s Local Council and Women’s Development Committee elections, along with the referendum, could potentially lead to the end of the Maldivian Constitution. He emphasized that to safeguard fundamental rights and the Constitution, it is essential to vote "no" in the referendum.
The public must keep in mind that the way they vote tomorrow could bring an end to the Constitution of the Maldives as we know it. Therefore, I speak the truth when I say we must save the Constitution. If you wish to protect the Constitution and preserve the reforms and progress we have brought to this country, I urge you to go out tomorrow and mark a "No" on your ballot.Legal counsel and former Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed
Furthermore, Jameel stated that the power to thwart the government's perceived antics lies with the people, emphasizing that the referendum represents their final opportunity to halt such actions. However, he warned that should the government prevail in the referendum, the nation would be set back by many years.
Jameel stated that if the public rejects the referendum, all pro-democracy advocates will unite and work together to find solutions to the existing issues.
Jameel urged everyone to unite and reject the referendum in order to reclaim the nation.
