A major fire broke out on Wednesday night at a chemical warehouse located at the intersection of Izzudheen Magu and Fulooniya Magu in Male', leading to the temporary relocation of 32 residents from the area to the Social Centre.
The fire that broke out in the warehouse adjacent to the Election Center has now been completely extinguished.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has announced that residents from four houses in the vicinity of the fire have been evacuated. The authority further stated that an evacuation center has been established at the Social Centre, with special arrangements in place to provide assistance to those affected by the incident. In an interview with state media, an NDMA official confirmed that efforts are currently underway to identify and assess the individuals impacted by the fire.
The fire broke out at a warehouse named "Prime Godown," owned by "Prime Fertilizer." According to the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), the facility, located in M. Kairuge, contained a significant quantity of fertilizers and chemicals.
To bring the blaze under control, a specialized foam fire tender from Velana International Airport was deployed to the scene. Although the fire has been extinguished, the area remains blanketed in thick smoke due to the chemicals stored within the warehouse.
The incident has also disrupted the operations of the Elections Commission. As the warehouse where the fire broke out is adjacent to the Election Center near Thaiba Mosque, the Commission has temporarily suspended the process of candidates signing the final voter registry for the upcoming election.
No injuries have been reported so far in connection with the incident. However, the warehouse and several surrounding buildings sustained varying degrees of damage. Relevant authorities are currently investigating the matter.
