The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has announced that it is investigating a dangerous fire that broke out late Thursday night at an expatriate accommodation block in ADh. Dhigurashu.
Five Bangladeshi nationals have died in this incident.
In response to the incident, the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) expressed its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased. The Commission further stated that it is closely monitoring the condition of those injured and investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident to determine if any human rights were violated or infringed upon.
Regarding the incident, Ahmed Faiz Rasheed, Assistant Council Executive of the island council, stated that the victims had initially escaped the fire but were killed after re-entering the building. He added that the fire is believed to have been caused by a gas leak.
Faiz stated that the fire broke out around 2:00 a.m. on Thursday night, and it is strongly suspected to have been caused by a leak from a cooking gas cylinder. He noted that video footage recorded by some individuals indicates a powerful explosion occurred. It is believed that the fire ignited while someone attempted to light the stove while gas was leaking, subsequently causing the cylinder to explode.
A large number of local residents gathered at the scene and managed to bring the fire under control within approximately half an hour.
A media official from Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) informed RaajjeMV that two individuals injured in a major fire in Dhigurah on Thursday night were transferred to the hospital for treatment on Friday. Both victims are currently being treated on ventilator support. The official did not provide specific details regarding the extent of their burns or further information on their conditions.
