Effective February 5, 2027, only Maldivian nationals to be permitted to work as cashiers in the Maldives
President Muizzu stated that by May 2, 2027, the government will have identified the exact number and identities of all undocumented immigrants residing in the Maldives.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that, effective February 5 next year, the position of cashier in the Maldives will be reserved exclusively for Maldivian citizens.
President Muizzu made these remarks while delivering the Presidential Address at the opening session of the 20th People’s Majlis for the year 2026, held on Thursday morning.
President Muizzu stated that government policies have led to the creation of 21,174 job opportunities between November 17, 2023, and the present. According to the Pension Office, this figure includes 6,724 jobs generated within the private sector.
President Muizzu announced that following cabinet deliberations, it has been decided that starting February 5, 2027, only Maldivians will be permitted to work as cashiers. Consequently, the President stated that at least 25,000 additional job opportunities will be created for locals within the coming year.
President Muizzu further stated that between November 17, 2023, and February 3, 2026, a total of 11,496 undocumented migrants residing illegally in the Maldives have been deported.
President Muizzu stated that by the conclusion of this operation on May 2, 2027, the government will be able to verify the exact number and identities of any undocumented immigrants remaining in the Maldives. The President further noted that this initiative would provide a permanent solution to the issue of undocumented foreigners in the country.
