It has emerged that the Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) is concealing an incident in which a driver sustained serious injuries after falling from a waste disposal ramp.
The incident occurred last Monday. According to his family, Hassan Nazir sustained serious injuries after falling into a container from the WAMCO waste disposal ramp at approximately 3:00 a.m. that morning.
Nazeer, who sustained serious injuries, is currently on ventilator support at IGMH. He has suffered fractures in three areas of his ribcage and is unable to breathe independently. Following WAMCO’s failure to address the matter, the family has now officially reported the case to the police.
Regarding the matter, police stated that a report was filed on the evening of February 23 concerning an incident at the WAMCO site in Malé on February 22, which left an individual with severe injuries. Police further confirmed that the victim is currently receiving treatment on a ventilator at IGMH.
Police are currently investigating the matter. However, authorities have not disclosed the specific details of the ongoing investigation.
Amidst widespread allegations of negligence by the Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) toward its staff, the company has recently faced criticism for delaying salary payments and withholding the mandatory Ramadan allowance. Furthermore, reports have emerged regarding the non-payment of wages to its expatriate workforce.
Employees of the Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) have reported that the company’s health insurance scheme was discontinued in 2022, and that no staff member has received a risk allowance to date. Furthermore, following the incident involving Nazeer’s fall, other drivers expressed their concerns and advocated for the disbursement of risk allowances. However, they claim they are being intimidated and threatened with dismissal for raising these issues.
