Man remanded in custody pending trial for attacking police officer with sharp weapon

The Criminal Court has ordered Ali Shaheem Shareef, a resident of Nolhivaranfaru in Haa Dhaalu Atoll, to be remanded in custody pending the outcome of his trial for an alleged armed assault on a police officer. Citing sufficient evidence to support the allegations and the potential threat the suspect poses to public safety, the court issued the detention order under the Prevention of Gang Crimes and Dangerous Offenses Act. Prosecutors presented various forms of evidence to the court, including crime scene photographs, video footage, and a formal statement from the victim.

The Criminal Court has ordered a man to be remanded in custody pending the outcome of his trial for allegedly attacking a police officer with a sharp-edged weapon.

Ali Shaheem, 27, of Nooru in HDh. Nolhivaranfaru, has been arrested and remanded in custody for the duration of his trial in connection with this case. Police have accused him of assault with a sharp-edged weapon.

Shaheem, who was arrested in connection with this case, was produced before the Criminal Court on Thursday for a remand hearing. The court ordered that he be remanded in custody pending the conclusion of his trial.

The court order stated that the Criminal Court issued the ruling as police had presented sufficient evidence to support the allegations against Ali Shaheem. According to the order, the evidence includes statements from the officers who attended the scene, the victim's statement, as well as photographic and video evidence.

The court order noted that Ali Shaheem had assaulted a police officer.

The court order further stated that Shaheem poses a potential threat to public safety. Consequently, it ruled that he must remain in custody, noting that his detention is also required under the Prevention of Gang Crimes and Other Serious Offenses Act.
