PNC is attempting to buy candidates under the guise of campaigning for the council elections: MDP
Hussain alleged that the ruling PNC is offering bribes to candidates ahead of the local council elections, claiming that millions are being distributed to induce them to withdraw their candidacies. He further asserted that the government is attempting to buy off those seeking to hold them accountable, suggesting that the recent distribution of 27 million Rufiyaa to media outlets was specifically intended to exert control over the press.

The main opposition, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), has accused the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) of engaging in a campaign to "buy off" candidates ahead of the upcoming local council elections.
Speaking at a press conference held by the MDP on Wednesday, Hussain Hassan, the MDP President for the Vilingili constituency, stated that the PNC is employing unconventional tactics as campaigning for the upcoming council elections progresses.
During door-to-door campaign activities, PNC teams are reportedly visiting households to inquire about the number of individuals seeking employment and those interested in job promotions. It was further alleged that they are approaching the public with illicit funds for bribery, carrying out acts of corruption in broad daylight.
Furthermore, Hussain alleged that the government is attempting to buy off opposition candidates by offering them millions in bribes. He stated that these efforts extend beyond candidates to include those working to hold the government accountable, claiming that 27 million Rufiyaa has already been distributed to exert control over the media. He further asserted that the government is acting in this manner with the sole intention of silencing opposition voices.
Another notable point is that with the election scheduled for April 4th, we have 52 days remaining. During this period, we are observing the government actively working to "buy off" candidates ahead of the vote. Specifically, we have noted that millions are being offered to opposition candidates and those competing against the government. During this window for candidates to withdraw their names, we are receiving reports from the candidates themselves regarding these offers being made by the government. The government’s campaign has essentially become an operation to purchase candidates. Never before in the Maldives have we witnessed such blatant corruption, with money being openly offered to buy off candidates.Hussain Hassan, President of the MDP Vilingili Constituency.
Furthermore, Hussain also spoke regarding the rally held by the MDP in Kulhudhuffushi on Tuesday night.
Hussain stated that preparations for the election are proceeding thoroughly, noting that the "Business Friendly" initiative—the second pledge of the campaign—has now been launched. He further explained that campaign rallies are being conducted through a decentralized approach. He highlighted that the joint rally held between Male' and Kulhudhuffushi received an overwhelming public response.
