The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has accused the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) of disclosing information that has not yet been made public by the Elections Commission (EC).
During a press conference held by the MDP on Wednesday, Hussain Hassan, the party's President for the Villingili constituency, expressed serious concerns regarding the Elections Commission's conduct toward political parties. He further questioned the commission's independence and impartiality.
Hussain stated that as preparations for the local council elections continue, the People's National Congress (PNC) has been disclosing information that the Elections Commission has not yet made public. He expressed serious concern over the fact that the PNC has access to complete details regarding seats won without a contest, describing it as a significant issue. Furthermore, he alleged that this sensitive information is being leaked to the PNC from within the Elections Commission itself.
As we have previously stated, we are now seeing the outcomes of the secret meetings held between the President of the Elections Commission, Fuad Thaufeeq, and President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. They already know the exact number of seats that will be secured without a contest, as well as the specific constituencies involved. While the MDP is also securing seats without a contest, we are not obtaining this information through the Elections Commission. In contrast, they are accessing and publicizing this data directly from within the Commission. They are already aware that they have secured seats equivalent to 10 percent of the total. This is how the PNC has framed its narrative.Hussain Hassan, President of the MDP Vilingili Constituency.
Furthermore, Hussain stated that the government is currently abusing the power it holds.
However, he asserted that the People's National Congress (PNC) is not driven by a distinct ideology, nor did they secure the public's vote by promoting a clear policy platform. He further alleged that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu ascended to power by deceiving the public and continues to govern through the same pattern of misrepresentation.
