The Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure has begun the procedure of signing agreements to compensate those who paid for the housing units under the “Gulhifalhu Housing Scheme”.

In a Twitter post, the ministry revealed that the procedure will be carried out until Thursday.

The signing of agreements is being carried out at the ministry building.

The project was initiated in 2010, during the administration of Former President and current Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed.

The project was to be completed by 2016 and while the contractor, Global Project Development Private Limited had sought funds to sell the units, a total of 158 individuals had paid up about MVR 35 million.

While a compensation agreement was not signed, some of the individuals who had settled the payments do not have payment receipts.

Following the ousting of the Nasheed administration through a coup d’état during 2012, the project came to a standstill and the construction work was completely halted.

After now incarcerated Former President Abdulla Yameen came into power, the agreement was cancelled during February 2016.

Although the former administration of Yameen had promised to issue flats developed in Hulhumalé for those who made payments to purchase the units in Gulhifalhu, the former regime had failed to follow through, which was proven to be the biggest concern for those who paid for the flats in Gulhifalhu.
