Commissioner of Prisons of the Maldives Correctional Service, Abdulla Munaz has been dismissed from his post.

RaajjeMV understands that Munaz was sacked sometime on Tuesday afternoon. President Solih has since designated the position to Ahmed Mohamed Fulhu, who had previously been the Inspector of Correctional Service at the Ministry of Home Affairs prior to the appointment.

According to a press release by the President's office, the decision was part of the Administration’s efforts to reform the country's correctional system and made under Article 18 of the Prisons and Parole Act (Act: 14/2013).

Announcing his termination via Twitter on Tuesday, Munaz stated that he was sacked because joint efforts from both inside and outside the state coalition to "incite chaos" in the prisons were unsuccessful. Hence, he expressed his joy at his dismissal.

This comes at a time where Munaz has been facing public criticism for riots inside the prison with many attributing these incidents to his incompetence.

Moreover, reports of detainees accidentally being released while pardons were issued ‎under Article 29 of the Clemency Act have also surfaced, resulting ‎in many members of the public expressing their distrust in Maldives Corrections.

Additional complaints against Munaz include difficulties in obtaining information regarding the corrections facilities. As such, it was revealed that Munaz provided false information regarding the prison riots.
