ADB to provide $50 million emergency loan to the Maldives for diesel procurement

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $50 million loan to assist the Maldives in importing essential fuel and ensuring the uninterrupted delivery of basic services. This financial support is designed to facilitate the procurement of vital supplies for electricity, water, transportation, and healthcare services, serving as a critical budgetary supplement alongside World Bank assistance to help the country overcome its current fiscal challenges.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has decided to provide a $50 million emergency assistance loan to help the Maldives overcome economic challenges arising from rising oil prices and a significant decline in tourist arrivals linked to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.

The primary objective of this assistance is to facilitate the financing of essential diesel imports for the Maldives, ensuring the uninterrupted delivery of electricity and water services to the public.

With 94 percent of the electricity generated in the Maldives dependent on imported fuel, the country’s desalination plants also rely heavily on oil to produce drinking water. However, rising global oil prices and a decline in tourism revenue have placed significant strain on the state budget regarding fuel procurement. This assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) will support not only electricity and water services but also the transportation of essential food and medical supplies, inter-island travel, and waste management operations.

This $50 million grant from the ADB complements the $40 million assistance package previously approved by the World Bank for the Maldives.

The ADB stated that it serves as a vital financial institution dedicated to supporting the development of countries across the Asia-Pacific region and assisting them in overcoming various challenges.

Established in 1966, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) currently comprises 69 member countries, 50 of which are from the region. The bank’s primary objectives are to support infrastructure development in member nations, improve living standards, and work toward building a secure future. In this regard, the assistance provided to the Maldives at this critical juncture serves as a significant boost to ensuring the uninterrupted delivery of essential public services.
