There are elements within society that are working to impair the conduct of the Maldives Customs Service (MCS), its Commissioner General Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed has said.

Shareef said this while speaking at the MCS’ commemoration of its 127th anniversary, held at the Dharubaaruge in Malé City, where he also said that the ports operated by the service are effectively the ‘gates’ of the country.

He said that while customs functions as one of the most important institutions in the country, with Maldives being so reliant on imports, there are those that use it smuggle and traffick items that are the most ‘dangerous’.

Shareef further said that such things are inevitable, given the nature of the society, and that MCS is perseverant to limit it as much as possible.

He then said that customs have been required to improve its functional capacity in order to cater for the ‘current economical advances made President Abdulla Yameen’s administration’.

Chief guest at the MCS’ ceremony was Vice President Abdulla Jihad and Home Minister Azleen Ahmed had also been present.
