The Prosecutor General’s office has decided to appeal two of former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb’s overturned verdicts.
These cases are Adeeb’s 15-year sentence issued over the presidential speedboat blast and the 8-year sentence issued over embezzlement of Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC).
While the High Court overturned these verdicts and ordered the Criminal Court to begin retrials, the Criminal Court returned the cases to the PG office, along with 13 other cases against Adeeb.
On May 28, the Criminal Court stated that it has decided not to proceed with the cases, since the charges were raised after an influenced investigation.
Prosecutor General Aishath Bisham told RaajjeMV that they will appeal two of the overturned verdicts at the Supreme Court.
The 15 cases the Criminal Court returned to the PG office include nine cases based on the Anti-Corruption Commission’s investigation into nine islands linked to the MMPRC scandal. The charges include misuse of Adeeb’s position for personal gain.
While the High Court has overturned Adeeb’s prison sentences totaling 33 years, he is currently serving a 15-day sentence over contempt of court and will be free on June 13. Adeeb is serving his sentence under house arrest due to his ill health.
