Swell waves damage harbor in GA Villingili

About 200 foot of the island harbor has been damaged due to sea swells

Swell waves in Villingili island of Gaaf Alif atoll have damaged the island’s harbor.

Speaking to RaajjeMV on Saturday, Villingili Council President Musthafa Mohamed revealed that about 200 foot of the island harbor has been damaged due to the swell waves experienced throughout the day following turbulent weather over the region.

Musthafa further revealed that the previous administration had assured the council on initiating a development plan for the island harbor, however, no actions were taken even as the new government of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih took over.

RaajjeMV understands that the council had shared concerns of the damage-prone harbor with the government previously and that the President had held discussions with the line of ministries to bring a solution to the matter.

However, Musthafa revealed that a solution is yet to be reached.

Musthafa further added that the reason the harbor was prone to severe damage was because the outer wall of the harbor was underdeveloped.

GA Villingili has a population of about 1,976 residents.

Earlier on Saturday, a tornado ripped through Fonadhoo island of Laamu atoll, causing massive damage to 10 households in its wake.

Turbulent weather continues to prevail over the Maldives after the end of a drawn-out dry season, last week. Torrential rains and choppy sea conditions are expected in most atolls, the MET office revealed, going on to add that swell wave are expected during high tide times in central and southern atolls.
