State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has revealed that the cause of the power outage earlier on Saturday was due to damage to one of its main cables.
STELCO’s media official said that the reason for the power cut across a large part of Malé City “was due to damage to one of the cables”. He added that the matter was fixed “not long after”.
He said that in their work, teams from the company had been active in the areas, in order to find a quick solution.
The nearly hour-long power outage caused interruption in water services in the areas as well.
Earlier in March, electricity and water services were disrupted throughout the capital city for over three hours.
STELCO reported that the outage was caused by a damaged high voltage cable connected to a transformer kept temporarily at the Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC), which provides water services to the nation. Residents living near the MWSC’s offices reported having heard a loud sound before the outage.
