Three candidates contested for the constituency seat; JP leader Qasim Ibrahim, MDP's Ali Azeem and independent candidate Ahmed Ibrahim

Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) has decided to recount the invalid votes cast for Maamigili constituency, in Saturday’s parliamentary elections.

ECM confirmed this on Tuesday, noting that the decision was made after a complaint filed to the Commission by a representative of one of the candidates of the constituency.

Three candidates contested for the constituency seat; Current Maamigili constituency MP and parliament Speaker, Jumhooree Party (JP) leader Qasim Ibrahim, main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s Ali Ameez and independent candidate Ahmed Ibrahim.

According to the preliminary results, Qasim won the seat with 1,081 seats, while MDP’s Azeem won 1,001 seats. Ibrahim received 23 seats.

While there is a difference of 80 votes between Qasim and Ameez, there were 190 invalids.
