A new horizon of technology dawns as Maizan Electronics launches the innovative MIIT!

Drawing upon the deep technical heritage of Maizan Electronics, an enduring pioneer within the nation’s marine technology and electronics landscape, the Maizan Institute of Innovation and Technology (MIIT) has set out on an inspiring mission to transform technological learning across the Maldives.

This dedicated center is designed to immerse citizens in contemporary tech advancements while opening up dynamic pathways for applied, experiential education.

The institute celebrated its formal inauguration on Thursday, marked by the presence of Maldives National University Chancellor Dr. Mahmood Shaugee, who officiated the launch of MIIT’s new website. During his keynote address, Dr. Shaugee emphasized how crucial an advanced technological training hub is for an archipelagic country like the Maldives.

MIIT is actively broadening its scope to deliver hands-on instruction across cutting-edge disciplines, including Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, Computer Coding, Drone Technology and 3D Design and Printing. These carefully structured courses are tailored to serve school students, young adults, educators, as well as professionals from both government agencies and private commercial enterprises. To ensure nationwide reach, the institute is also delivering these learning opportunities to atoll-based schools via online educational platforms.

Addressing the gathering, MIIT founder Maizan Ahmed Manik voiced his aspiration for local youth to grow into a proficient workforce capable of inventing novel technologies. He underscored that introducing the younger generation to technology and instilling a functional understanding of how these systems operate is indispensable for the country’s progress. Guests at the event were also treated to an official tour showcasing the institute’s state-of-the-art facilities alongside the digital platform unveiling.

The emergence of MIIT stands as a major triumph in the ongoing journey spearheaded by Maizan Ahmed Manik. With a vision focused on guaranteeing that every Maldivian student can discover cutting-edge tools and build self-assurance in the tech field, this venture promises to unlock exciting possibilities for promising young talent throughout the Maldives.

A look back at the historic journey:

Well before vessels in the Maldives relied on digital charting tools, satellite communications, and satellite positioning, our island community needed knowledgeable pioneers who could solve the complex connectivity challenges of an archipelago. It was within this environment that the origins of Maizan Electronics took root.

The enterprise began its journey back in 1967 with the launch of Maizan Radio Services, a private workshop focused on repairing and maintaining radio, broadcast, and communication gear during an era when such technical services were extremely rare locally. A decade later, in 1977, the business adopted the name Maizan Electronics. It formally incorporated as a private limited company in 1981, beginning the commercial importation and distribution of marine communication systems across the country.

Throughout the 1980s, Maizan Electronics expanded its footprint across the maritime sector by rolling out VHF, UHF, and SSB/HF radio gear. As new technologies surfaced in the 1990s, the company adapted rapidly, bringing marine radars, GPS receivers, and fish-finding tools to local waters, while simultaneously conducting practical training sessions so fishermen could comfortably operate these modern aids.

Over the decades that followed, the company stayed at the forefront of maritime modernization, delivering satellite phones, satellite-enabled fish finding services, and marine emergency distress solutions. Moving beyond equipment sales, Maizan Electronics partnered with the Maldives Fishermen’s Association in 2013 to establish a dedicated Fishermen’s Community Center on Laamu Gan, granting local crews access to satellite data for pinpointing prime fishing waters alongside ongoing technical guidance.

Through these consistent efforts, Maizan Electronics grew far beyond an ordinary supplier, serving as a trusted national partner that bridged advanced technology with ocean-dependent communities.

This dedicated service has earned prominent national accolades. On Republic Day in 2015, the President of the Maldives presented Maizan Ahmed Manik with the National Award of Honour for his significant contributions to the fisheries industry, specifically in training and community awareness. Later in 2019, he was further distinguished with an achievement award celebrating his dedication to introducing advanced fisheries technology and training local fishermen in its practical use.

The establishment of the Maizan Institute of Innovation and Technology stands as one of the most remarkable modern endeavors from Maizan Electronics. Built on a rich bedrock of engineering capability, MIIT channels decades of real-world expertise into an organized learning curriculum.

In every sense, MIIT captures the spirit of the overarching Maizan journey. The very company that spent generations placing cutting-edge tools into the hands of local seafarers and fishermen has now turned the page toward a bright new chapter, putting transformative technological expertise directly into the hands of the nation’s rising generation.
