All staple food will be sold at the same price in all islands from Monday, State Trading Organization (STO) has said.
While bulk of rice, flour and sugar are imported by STO and sold at prices set by the economic ministry, prices of staple foods in the outer atolls are significantly higher compared to capital Malé City.
STO's managing director Hussain Amru, back in March, assured that staple foods will be sold at the same price across Maldives, from the 1st of April.
As such, a bulk of rice is now sold at MVR 240, while a kilo is for MVR 4.80. Bulk of sugar and flour are now price at MVR 241 and MVR 109 respectively, while a kilo is priced at MVR 4.82 and MVR 3.80.
While the state-owned wholesaler will be appointing sales agents, it urged authorities and local councils to ensure that staples are sold at the fixed rates.
Noting that his pledge to provide staples at a uniform rate across the country has been fulfilled, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih via twitter thanked STO's management and staff for helping him reach this agreement.
