A woman who was seriously injured in an accident in Thimarafushi island of Thaa atoll is in a coma, according to her family.

Local media reports that injured is 52-year-old Zuleykha Abdul Ghani.

She was walking near the Thimarafushi airport when struck by a speeding van driver. The driver is to have lost control of the vehicle.

While the police are investigating the matter, there have been no arrests so far. However, they have seized the driver's license.

Citing Vandhoo Council President Mohamed Giyas, local media reports that the woman sustained serious injuries to the head, including a brain hemorrhage.

There has been an increase in road accidents throughout the country, and police statistics show that 52 accidents occurred within the last week.

She is currently being treated at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at ADK Hospital in the capital. Doctors are to have operated on her on Tuesday night.

She is currently on ventilator support.
